Hi, I’m Kristian, and welcome to the Learners of English Podcast. I’m Dutch, I’m 43 years old and I live in Prague, the Czech Republic. I teach English, mostly to adults, but also to teenagers.
In this introduction of the podcast I’m going to tell you two things: Firstly, I’m going to tell you a bit about me, and secondly, I’m going to answer the question: what exactly is this podcast and who is it for?
I moved to Prague exactly 2 years ago today, at a time when I was really unhappy. I suffered from depression, I was on a waiting list for special therapy, and for the first time in my life I was taking pills to stop the noise in my head. Basically, to be completely honest with you, I was at my lowest point. There were many moments that I hated my life.
I know these are very strong words, but I want to be completely honest about how I felt at that time in my life. At the age of 41, I felt really, really miserable.
Something had to change. I wanted to go away. I needed to go away. I wanted to leave the Netherlands and start anew. I wanted to dream it all up again.
So, what did I do? I asked myself the most important question there is: What do I enjoy doing, even when I feel miserable? Learning English. (Examples) Then I thought about the Cambridge Proficiency Course I did in 2011 and that’s when I got the idea: What is the best way to learn? To teach. So, let’s do that. But where? Somewhere In Europe; Somewhere completely new. I compared different options: Warsaw, Budapest and Prague. I decided to go to Prague.
In September 2018 I arrived in Prague, and after a 4-week course I got my CELTA certificate in September 2018, and I started teaching. Most people I teach are adults who are busy.
Now, fast forward to September 2020. In the past two years I learnt something very interesting. I’ve learnt that the problem for most adult learners of English, is not the English itself. The problem is that most people don’t do the work that’s needed to improve their English.
How do I know this?
Well, I ask my students three questions:
- Why are you here?
- Why is your English not at the level you want it to be?
- Why are you not doing the work?
And this is the main reason why I’m starting this podcast. I want to help you start doing the work, so that you can improve your English and make your dreams come true.
Why should you listen to me?
If you listen to this, I assume that you want to improve your English. I want to help you. In my podcast I’m going to motivate you to do the work. If you listen to this, I assume that you want to improve your English. And I’m gonna do it my way.
So why should you listen to me? What makes me different from other podcasts/teachers/coaches?
Well, remember the start of this episode. Two years ago I hated my life. I had to start from the ground up. And two years later it’s still not easy. Sometimes I feel lonely. I don’t have much money, and the process of progress sometimes feels very slow.
But you know what? That doesn’t matter. Because when I was at my lowest point, two years ago. I did not give up. I chose to continue, to start a new life, to dream it all up again. So even if my progress sometimes feels slow, I do make progress.
Everyday I’m improving my English.
Everyday I’m improving my Czech.
These two things give me a lot of knowledge that you can use, too, if you want to improve your English.
So, what can you expect from me?
- I will talk about the 4 Ps. Priorities. Practice. Patience. Progress. Everything, and I mean everything, in this podcast is always related to these 4 Ps.
- I love reading and listening, so I will talk about books, audiobooks and podcasts, and how these things can help you improve your English. Especially when you don’t have much time and you don’t live in an English speaking country.
For whom is my podcast?
Anyone who wants to learn about making progress is welcome, but my podcast is going to be especially helpful for adults who want to improve their English.
OK, that’s all. That’s everything I wanted to tell you in this introduction.
So, what can you do now?
There are three things you can do:
Subscribe to the podcast;
Subscribe to my youtube channel;
Send me an email to let me know how I can help you. I offer a free coaching session to anyone who wants to improve their English. Don’t worry. I’m not going to convince you to buy something from me. I’m only going to listen to you, and ask you a few questions to help you get started.
OK, that’s it from me. take care of yourself and each other.
Until next time.
